Character & Wellbeing

Student Wellbeing

LUYA Academy is committed to nurturing the academic, emotional and social well-being of every student. We believe a supportive and caring environment is essential for students to thrive, both in and out of the classroom.

Learning & Pastoral Support

All staff share responsibility for the academic success and emotional safety of our students.

A

Academic Support

Every student learns differently. Teachers plan learning that meets diverse needs and styles.

  • Differentiated instruction in every classroom
  • Individual learning plans, developed with teachers, parents and support staff, for students identified as needing additional support
  • Academic support sessions that may be offered during lunch breaks, after school or in designated support blocks
  • Reasonable assessment accommodations where appropriate, such as extra time or modified tasks

B

Pastoral Care

Pastoral care is central to LUYA’s holistic approach and is delivered primarily through homeroom classes and daily teacher–student interactions.

  • The homeroom teacher is each student’s primary point of contact for well-being
  • Homeroom teachers guide social development, address concerns and liaise with parents
  • Regular informal check-ins help students feel supported, connected and safe
  • When a student needs more help, teachers can involve the school’s Student Welfare Team

A safe, healthy and positive school

C

Emotional & Social Wellbeing

We cultivate a learning environment that is safe, kind and respectful of differences. Students are encouraged to include others, offer help and encouragement, and practise empathy in their words and actions.

Through everyday care from teachers and classmates, students learn to build healthy relationships and to ask for help when they need it.

D

Health & Safety

Taking care of students’ health and ensuring their safety is of utmost importance.

  • Clear safety guidelines for classrooms, playgrounds and shared spaces
  • Regular emergency drills, including fire and earthquake procedures
  • First-aid kits in every classroom; homeroom teachers as the first contact for medical help
  • Health education, healthy eating guidance and the importance of good rest and sleep

E

Positive School Culture

Our behaviour principles — Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Kind and Be Safe — help every student contribute to a positive community.

Bullying, harassment and intimidation are not accepted at LUYA and are treated as serious matters requiring immediate follow-up. Wherever possible, we use restorative approaches that help students take responsibility and repair relationships.

F

Family–School Partnership

Effective communication between school and home is essential. Teachers keep families informed of academic or emotional concerns and work together with parents to support each child’s development.

Families help too — for example by sharing any medical concerns or allergies with the school, and by supporting healthy routines such as a good night’s sleep and nutritious lunches.

This page summarises LUYA Academy’s approach to student wellbeing. Detailed policies and procedures are shared with enrolled families in the Student/Parent Handbook.
