IB at LUYA: Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers for families about our IB candidacy, the PYP and the MYP
Candidate status: LUYA Academy is a candidate school for the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). We are not yet an authorized IB World School, and candidacy does not guarantee authorization. Read our official candidate statements.
About our candidacy
What does LUYA’s IB candidate school status mean?
It means the IB has accepted LUYA Academy as a candidate school for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP).
During candidacy, a school works to align its curriculum, teaching, assessment and policies with IB requirements, with guidance from the IB. The IB then decides whether to authorize the school.
Is LUYA already an authorized IB World School?
No. LUYA Academy is a candidate school for the PYP and MYP and has not yet been authorized.
Only schools authorized by the IB can offer IB programmes and be known as IB World Schools.
Does candidacy guarantee authorization?
No. Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.
Authorization is a decision made by the IB after a school completes the full authorization process. We will not predict dates or outcomes, and we will share news with families through official school channels.
About the PYP and MYP
Which age groups do the PYP and MYP serve?
In general, the PYP is designed for children aged 3 to 12, and the MYP for students aged 11 to 16.
At LUYA, our PYP pages describe Kindergarten to Grade 5, and our MYP candidacy covers Grades 6 to 9.
Is the IB a curriculum framework, a set of textbooks or an examination system?
The PYP and MYP are curriculum frameworks, not sets of textbooks.
They describe how learning is planned, taught and assessed, and schools design their own units within the framework and local requirements. The PYP has no external examinations. The MYP offers optional external assessment (eAssessment) in the final year of the programme for authorized schools.
Does an IB education have to be taught entirely in English?
No. IB programmes are taught in many languages around the world, and the IB values learning in more than one language.
LUYA’s current curriculum offers core subjects in English and Chinese, and also includes Spanish as a third language. For details about language arrangements in a particular grade, please contact the school.
Does completing the MYP mean receiving an IB diploma?
No. The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a separate programme for students aged 16 to 19.
Completing the MYP does not in itself lead to an IB diploma. LUYA’s IB candidacy covers the PYP and MYP only.
Learning and assessment
How does inquiry support strong foundations in languages and mathematics?
Inquiry gives students real reasons to use the skills they learn.
Core skills such as reading, writing, calculation and problem solving still need to be taught and practiced directly. Inquiry then asks students to apply them—for example, reading to find information, writing to explain findings, or using data to answer a question.
What does inquiry look like in kindergarten?
In the early years, inquiry often looks like play.
Children explore materials, ask questions, talk with friends and teachers, and show their ideas through diverse means. Teachers observe closely and plan next steps from children’s interests. It is not a push toward formal primary school lessons.
How is student progress assessed?
In IB programmes, assessment is ongoing and is designed to support learning.
In the PYP, teachers use observation, student work, feedback and reflection. The MYP uses criterion-related assessment, with published criteria for each subject group. For how LUYA currently assesses and reports progress, please contact the school.
For families
What should families consider when transferring from another school?
Every child’s situation is different, so we recommend talking with our admissions team.
It can help to consider your child’s language background, previous curriculum and experience of collaborative, question-led learning. Our admission briefing information is a good place to start.
How can parents support learning?
Show interest in your child’s questions and ideas.
Read together, share your family’s languages and culture, encourage effort and reflection, let children learn from mistakes, and stay in touch with teachers.
Why is LUYA pursuing IB programmes?
The IB’s focus on inquiry, international-mindedness and whole-person development connects closely with LUYA’s mission.
We aim to provide a challenging and enriching learning environment that emphasizes empathy and independence. You can read more on our IB at LUYA page.
Where can families find updates and contact LUYA?
Updates will be shared through official school channels and this website.
