Science

The science curriculum at LUYA Academy covers 5 major areas of science: physical science, life science, earth science, space science and the nature of science. In physical science, the students learn about the non-living system in the fields of physics and chemistry.

Physical science allows the students to understand the natural forces that govern our world and how they relate to forms of energy, so they can analyze and observe natural phenomena with a sense of fascination.

In life science, the students are introduced to the organic world in the fields of biology and ecology such as genetics, evolution and ecosystems. Life science helps the students develop a natural wonder and compassion for the development of life, so they can understand organisms that surround us and the roles that humans play in helping or harming the natural world.

In earth science, the students learn about the study of Earth via geology. The students explore the properties of our planet and its natural history, so they can be aware of our impacts on the planet and cultivate a sense of responsibility and appreciation for it.

In Space Science, the students begin to learn astronomy. Space Science allows them to discover the mysteries of the stars, galaxies and other celestial bodies, so they can acquire a curiosity for the uncharted.

Lastly, intertwining all these areas together, is the nature of science which guides the students in understanding the scientific methodologies and principles of research and observation.

Satisfying a natural curiosity about our world is one of the fundamental drives of science. The study of science helps students gain the confidence and courage to ask questions, and revel in their mistakes, all in the pursuit of knowledge and truths of our universe. As an inhabitant of this rapidly changing environment, science gives structure to complex systems and guides the students to develop a systematic approach so that they can implement positive change as a future leader. The science curriculum at Luya Academy is conceptually oriented, which fosters critical thinking instead of memorization of facts. The students are also given many opportunities and encouraged to share their ideas in discussions, so they can gain different perspectives, innovate and collaborate with their peers. This establishes a foundation of cooperative work and introspection.

At LUYA, the students are guided through open-ended discussions and questions, and are encouraged to challenge the answer, so they can form their own ideas independently. There are also many hands-on activities where they fully embrace the concepts of trial and error, where trying and failing is all part of the journey to success. There are also lab experiments where the students engage in the framework of the scientific method and achieve results through testing and experimentation. Lastly, there students also partake in a major science project per unit, where they design, observe, test and present their findings on a chosen topic, all done independently, or in cooperation with their peers. At the end of each year, the students gain a better understanding about the world of science, and learn to critically observe, investigate and wonder about our universe.
