Character & Wellbeing

ARISE: The LUYA SPIRIT

ARISE represents LUYA Academy’s Schoolwide Learner Outcomes. Rooted in Kindness — the value at the heart of our community — these five values describe the character we hope to grow in every student, in and beyond the classroom.

A

Ambition

What it means

Ambition means having big dreams and setting meaningful goals. It is about staying motivated to learn, even when things get tough.

Ambitious students challenge themselves, seek opportunities to grow and believe they can make a difference. At LUYA, we encourage students to dream boldly, work hard and develop into lifelong learners.

What it looks like at LUYA

  • Setting personal learning goals and working steadily towards them
  • Choosing challenge over the easy option
  • Persevering and asking for help when something is difficult
  • Seeking new opportunities to learn and grow

For example: a student who dreams of becoming an artist might draw every day and take art classes, while a student who wants to excel in football might join a team and practise regularly.

R

Respect

What it means

Respect is about treating others with kindness and showing care, no matter how different they may be. It includes using polite words, listening attentively and accepting diverse perspectives.

Respect also means valuing yourself — persisting when faced with challenges and believing in your own abilities.

What it looks like at LUYA

  • Listening attentively to teachers and classmates
  • Using polite language and kind words
  • Accepting and learning from different perspectives and cultures
  • Encouraging someone who is trying their best
  • Caring for school property and others’ belongings

For example: students show respect when they listen to others — adults and peers alike — help classmates, or encourage someone who is trying their best.

I

Integrity

What it means

Integrity means being honest, doing the right thing and taking responsibility for your actions. It is a foundation for trust and strong relationships.

At LUYA, we believe integrity creates a culture where everyone is accountable and ethical in their choices.

What it looks like at LUYA

  • Owning up to mistakes and learning from them
  • Keeping promises and commitments
  • Completing one’s own work honestly
  • Respecting the ideas of others and acknowledging sources

For example: when students act with integrity — such as owning up to a mistake or keeping a promise — they build respect among peers and adults.

S

Self-Discipline

What it means

Self-discipline is the ability to control your actions, stay focused and take responsibility for your behaviour. It empowers students to manage their time, avoid distractions and prioritise what is important.

LUYA encourages students to practise self-discipline daily, helping them grow into independent, motivated learners who can set goals and work steadily towards them.

What it looks like at LUYA

  • Managing time and completing tasks on schedule
  • Staying focused and avoiding distractions
  • Being punctual and prepared with the right materials
  • Building healthy daily habits

For example: choosing to study before playing games shows self-discipline.

E

Empathy

What it means

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It involves kindness, compassion and an openness to different perspectives.

At LUYA, we foster a community where empathy helps to build meaningful connections, promotes inclusivity and supports emotional well-being.

What it looks like at LUYA

  • Checking on a friend who seems sad or worried
  • Including others in games and activities
  • Offering help and encouragement to peers
  • Considering how our words and actions affect others

For example: students show empathy when they check on a sad friend, include others in activities, or support someone in need.

Living ARISE every day

ARISE is not a poster on the wall. It shapes daily routines, recognition and reflection across the school.

01

In the classroom

Teachers connect learning expectations — being respectful, responsible, kind and safe — to the ARISE values.

02

Through the House System

Students earn House points for showing respect, kindness, effort and leadership, and celebrate success together.

03

In the community

On activities such as Community Service Day, students represent LUYA and model the school’s values.
